Padar Island sunrise trek: the climb, the view and what it is not
Updated 10 October 2026
Padar is a viewpoint, not a beach stop and not a dragon site. The climb to the main view takes about 25 to 45 minutes, usually before dawn, and sunrise is 06:18 in July. Our 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N routes reach it at sunrise; the 1D day trip reaches it in daylight.
What Padar is, and what it is not
Padar is a hill island between Komodo and Rinca. The point of stopping is a ridge viewpoint that looks over three bays with differently coloured sand. You come for the shape of the land from above, not for a beach or a swim.
It is not a dragon stop. There are no dragons on Padar, so the dragon walk is at Komodo later the same day. It is also not an easy stroll. The path has loose ground and steep sections, and sturdy shoes decide whether it is enjoyable.
The facts here are general operator knowledge, not measurements. The table below marks that, and the sunrise times come from a calculation for the viewpoint's position, not from a guarantee.
The island has a main viewpoint and a higher ridge beyond it. Most groups stop at the main viewpoint, which is the one in the photographs, and start down before the sun is high.

The climb, from boat to ridge
Guests usually leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise. That puts the start in the dark in most months, so a headtorch is not optional. Sunrise is 06:18 in July and 05:31 in November, so the wake-up call moves through the year.
The climb to the main viewpoint takes about 25 to 45 minutes. The upper ridge takes longer, and most guests stop at the main view. Expect to be wet with sweat even in the cool air, and expect other groups on the path in the busy months of July, August and December.
Carry water and a light layer for the wait at the top. Leave the hard suitcase and the good sandals aboard. The descent is the part where loose stone punishes bad shoes.
- Footwear: sturdy shoes with grip.
- Light: headtorch with fresh batteries.
- Skin: sunscreen for the walk down.

How our route reaches Padar
The overnight leg decides how fresh you are at the foot of the hill. On the 2D1N, you watch sunset at Kalong on day one, then sail an overnight leg of roughly three to four hours to Padar. On the 3D2N, the leg from Taka Makassar to Padar is a smaller estimate of two to three hours. On the 4D3N, you do Padar at sunrise on day two after the Kalong sunset.
The 1D day trip does Padar in daylight, after breakfast aboard. There is no sunrise on that route, and the climb is hotter. If the sunrise is the reason for the trip, do not book the 1D.
We do not publish a fixed night anchorage. The captain decides on the day, and the brochure names none. Take a motion tablet before the overnight leg if the sea is lively.

Cloud, rain and a crowded ridge
Padar is not tide-dependent. Weather is the variable. Cloud can flatten the sunrise, and in the wet months, December to March, rain makes the path slick. We do not refund a sunrise that cloud removed, because we cannot sell a clear sky.
July and August bring windier seas and busier ridges. Calm, clear months are April to June and October to November, and the viewpoint has fewer people in those months. The best odds sit in the dry months, and the best of those are the calm ones.
If the sea is rough, the captain may change the overnight plan, because the route notice allows destinations to change for weather, currents and park or port decisions. A change is explained on the day. If you want the sunrise above everything else, book a calm month and a 3D2N, and give the sky two mornings of tolerance.
| Month | Sea | Visibility | Mantas | Crowds | Rain | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | rough | low | peak | low | wet | Wet and rough, with the lowest visibility of the year, and mantas at their best. Take the lower deck if your stomach is shaky. |
| February | rough | low | peak | low | wet | The roughest, wettest month, and a peak for mantas. The supplier calendar has listed no February sailings. |
| March | moderate | medium | good | low | wet | The last wet month. Showers ease, seas settle and mantas are still good. |
| April | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | The dry season starts, the sea calms and visibility is among the best of the year. |
| May | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Dry, calm and clear: the dependable month for snorkelling and the Padar climb. |
| June | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Calm and clear, with the south-east wind beginning to build toward July. |
| July | rough | medium | peak | high | dry | Windier and busier, with mantas picking up. Expect company at Padar and Pink Beach. |
| August | rough | medium | peak | high | dry | The windiest dry month and the busiest anchorages. Book early, and take the lower deck if you are motion-sensitive. |
| September | moderate | high | peak | medium | dry | The wind eases, visibility returns and mantas are still around: a strong shoulder month. |
| October | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Calm, clear and hot, with fewer boats than July and August. |
| November | calm | high | fair | low | dry | The end of the dry season: calm water, clear visibility and the quietest sites of the year. |
| December | moderate | medium | peak | medium | wet | The wet season returns and so do the mantas. Late December fills with holiday travellers. |

FAQ
How early do we wake up for Padar?
Guests leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise, and sunrise is 06:18 in July and 05:31 in November. Plan for a wake-up call roughly ninety minutes before sunrise, since you need time for tea, shoes and the landing. The crew wakes the cabins.
Can I do Padar on the one-day trip?
Yes, but in daylight. The 1D route does Padar after breakfast aboard, then Pink Beach and Komodo, with drop-off at 20:00. You will not see the sunrise on that route. The overnight routes, 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N, give the sunrise.
Are there dragons on Padar?
No. Padar has no dragons and no ranger trek. The dragon walk is on Komodo Island, later on the same day of the 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N routes. Padar is for the viewpoint, and the view is the whole reason to go.
Is Padar included in the park fee?
The park fee is paid per person per day: IDR 250,000 for international guests, IDR 50,000 for domestic guests on weekdays and IDR 75,000 at weekends. Ranger, pier and snorkel levies are separate and can change. Ask the desk what your date adds before you budget.
What if it rains at sunrise?
The path becomes slick, and the captain and guide decide whether to go up. The route notice allows stops to change for weather. We do not refund a cloudy sunrise, but on the 3D2N or 4D3N you may get a second chance elsewhere, and the climb takes 25 to 45 minutes either way.
