Komodo couples private boat: the view from the pillow

Updated 10 October 2026

Couples who want the sea from the pillow should book a Japanese Room on the upper deck: double bed, private balcony, big windows and a low tatami table. It costs IDR 8,500,000 (≈ USD 521) per person on the open trip. The upper deck moves most, so choose it by your stomach, not the photo.

The Japanese Room, in plain terms

The Japanese Rooms are on the upper deck, above everything else on the boat. Each has a double bed, an ensuite with hot shower, air conditioning, big ocean-view windows and a private balcony. The feature that gives the room its name is a low tatami-style table by the window, where you sit on the floor with coffee while the anchorage wakes up.

Light and quiet are the real selling points. The upper deck is the farthest from the engine, so the noise rating is the lowest on the boat. The cost is motion. With no stabilisers, the top deck swings further than the main deck below it, and the lower deck moves least. Better you hear that now than discover it at two in the morning.

A Japanese Room can take an extra bed for a third guest. For a couple, that is irrelevant; for two couples sharing a charter, it is a useful fact.

A day for two, from the roof down

Most of the day is not spent in the cabin. The sundeck has bean bags, cushions and umbrellas, and it is where couples end up after the snorkel stops. There are two stand-up paddleboards, shared by every guest, so ask the guide early if you want a turn at Pink Beach.

Sunset is the one appointment. On 2D1N and 4D3N it falls on day one at Kalong, where thousands of flying foxes leave the mangroves at dusk; on 3D2N it comes on day two. The bats start about fifteen minutes after sunset, so be on the deck before the light goes. You watch from the boat. Nobody lands.

Dinner is at one long table. On a charter the table is yours. On the open trip, you share it with the other guests, and for many couples the shared table is where the trip's best conversations happen. If that sounds tiring, book the charter.

Open trip or whole boat: the arithmetic

On the open trip a couple pays twice IDR 8,500,000 (≈ USD 521), the 3D2N cabin price per person. The route is fixed, the departures are on 122 listed start dates (mostly Mondays and Fridays), and the next is Monday, 12 October 2026.

A charter prices the boat, not the cabin. For 3D2N, one to five guests pay IDR 100,000,000 (≈ USD 6,135), which a couple carries alone. At that rate you are buying empty cabins in exchange for an empty boat. It is a choice about privacy, never about saving money.

If the budget leans cheaper, the Balinese Room on the lower deck is IDR 6,950,000 (≈ USD 426) per person. It has portholes, not a balcony, and it sits closest to the engine, so it is a poor trade if the view is the reason you came. We would send a couple who wants windows to the Japanese Room and a couple who wants a low price to the Balinese Room, and we would not blur the two.

When this is the wrong trip for two

Three cases. First, a couple who gets seasick easily should not take the top deck without a plan; read our guide on which cabin to pick before you choose. Second, a couple who wants a spa, a jacuzzi or satellite internet will be disappointed. There is none of the three on board; the Wi-Fi is a local hotspot that works only where there's phone signal. Third, a couple who wants a one-night trip to see everything should know that 2D1N splits the park into two halves, with Kelor and Kalong on the first day and Padar and Komodo on the second.

Otherwise it is simple. Tell us the dates, the room and whether you want the boat to yourselves. We will tell you what is free and what it costs.

One more case: if you want the cheapest possible fare, the Japanese Room is not it. It costs IDR 8,500,000 (≈ USD 521) per person, against IDR 6,950,000 (≈ USD 426) for a Balinese Room two decks down.

Who this boat suits

  • Couples who want a bathtub at sea: the Western rooms on the main deck.
  • Guests who want a tatami table, big sea windows and a balcony strip: the Japanese rooms on the upper deck.
  • Families sharing a Balinese room with an extra bed, with children under 3 travelling free.
  • Groups of up to 18 who want a whole 31 m phinisi with 6 ensuite air-conditioned cabins and 7 crew.
  • Snorkellers and paddleboarders who want sunset on the sundeck and a fixed 3D2N departure on Monday & Friday.

Who it does not suit

  • Divers who need a compressor and tanks aboard: this is a snorkel boat.
  • Anyone who needs reliable internet at sea: Wi-Fi is local only, no satellite link.
  • Guests who need a stabilised steel hull, stabilisers or a lift between the three decks.
  • Anyone expecting a jacuzzi on deck.

When this is the wrong boat

  • You have one night and want the whole park: the 2D1N puts Kelor and Kalong on day one and Padar and Komodo on day two, with only one of Manta Point or Taka Makassar.
  • You book a Balinese room expecting a balcony or sea-view windows: it has portholes on the lower deck.
  • You are a light sleeper on the lower deck: engine noise is strongest there.

FAQ

Do the Japanese Rooms have a bath?

No. The bathtub is in the Western Rooms on the main deck. A Japanese Room has an ensuite with a hot shower, a double bed, a private balcony and a tatami-style table. If a bath matters more than the view, book Western; the open trip price is IDR 8,500,000 (≈ USD 521), the same as Japanese.

Is the open trip romantic, or crowded?

It is shared. The boat holds up to 18 guests, but cabin count caps the open trip at 6 rooms, and everyone eats at one table. Couples usually find the evenings sociable and the days spread out across the sundeck and the water.

Can we get a private sunset without chartering the boat?

Not exactly. The sundeck is shared on the open trip. What you can do is claim a bean bag early, take the paddleboard out near sunset, or add a beach dinner for IDR 2,950,000 (≈ USD 181) as a minimum per couple on the evening it suits.

What is the quietest cabin for light sleepers?

The upper deck, where the Japanese Rooms are, rates least for noise and most for motion. The lower-deck Balinese Rooms are the reverse: least motion, most engine noise. The main-deck Western Rooms sit in the middle on both. Open trip prices are IDR 8,500,000 (≈ USD 521) for Japanese, IDR 8,500,000 (≈ USD 521) for Western and IDR 6,950,000 (≈ USD 426) for Balinese. Choose the problem you can live with.

Do two people need to book the whole boat for privacy?

No. Two people book one cabin at IDR 8,500,000 (≈ USD 521) each and get a private room, ensuite bathroom and balcony. Only the decks and the table are shared with other guests. Whole-boat pricing starts at IDR 100,000,000 (≈ USD 6,135) for 3D2N and suits groups, not pairs, unless privacy is worth that much to you.
